Image of the Sun White T-Shirt > Image of the sun : Medieval image of the sun
Medieval image of the sun
Don't want to neglect the Image of the Sun store at Cafe Press with new tee shirts with this glowing sunshine with a teletubby face in the middle (that show creeps me out).
ATF / Troyer Ornament Matrices
This reminds me of the book I just reviewed about Pictorial Webster's: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities. There's something so permanent and unyielding about these typographic ornaments from the past.

Maternity Henna patterns, news & artists
Little Fiddly Bits
The center of henna production in the world is located in the Rajasthan region of north western India. The plant fibers will not stain without the help of a mild solution of lemon juice or other acid (soaked overnight) that chemically reacts with ground leaves to release the dye. Henna tattoos start out with an orange color that changes over the course of three days to a darker, red-brown color which can last about fourteen days, typically. Natural henna does not pose a health risk, but be careful with the impurities found in some pre-mixed henna products.

alchemy and hermetic science at alchemical arts
The storefront at Alchemical Arts looks completely cool. The background image didn't show up in Chrome, but worked in other browsers to give a complete view of the company masthead. Interesting

Thought this artwork from JEAN MARC CALVET - Nicaragua
was made of rubber bands (which sounds like a good idea).

hand-drawn paisley graffiti gallery
The drawings in the dotpattern artwork gallery were completely covering the walls and ceiling of a broom closet in a New York City office building.
paisley pattern in black and white
That's the dreary title of what's actually an interesting government document defining the types of patterns for fabric or paper, with this excellent curly-cued version of a paisley pattern in black and white (click image to zoom, in new window). The categories include these old time favorites:
1. Perforated or openwork (see this lace gallery)
2. Combined unidirectional and bidirectional pattern
3. Unidirectional
4. Paisley
5. Plaid or tartan
6. Texture or open weave
7. Tracery of uniform line
8. Zigzag or wave
9. Stippled effect
10. Grid or graph matrix
11. Reverse, rotated, or alternating pattern element
12. Striated or linear arrangement
13. Single isolated systematically repeating element
14. Random arrangement of pattern elements within repeat unit
15. Appliqué, medallion or singular pattern unit

Jinny Yu | Paintings / Patterns
Jinny Yu | Paintings
Interesting pattern from Jinny Yu that reminds me of the endpapers for a book I reviewed recently - Pictorial Webster's: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities. Jinny's work is being shown this month at The Convent of St. Cecilia in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
The pattern on the endpapers and the edge of the pages makes use of all the type that was stamped with a linotype machine for the captions of the book. All the type was cast together and printed with different colors.

More marvelous marbling - The Private Library
Marbling and The Private Library
More delicious marbled endpapers. The technique to spatter the white speckles over the whole completed design is called "antiquing", applied right before the paper is laid down into the basin.

Patterns in nature are seldom perfectly symmetrical or regular. The best patterns created by marbling artists also have a random effect, like looking into a fireplace. Marbling was an essential trade in the middle ages, as this article suggests, and is still practiced in colonial Williamsburg.

Kolam patterns made of sand
This Kolam pattern seems appropriate this time of year for Valentine's Day in America. These patterns are drawn with colored sand during the Ponggal festival in the Tamil regions of India and on Sri Lanka.
P.S. After a few difficulties, the Atom 2 feed is back in good order without the weight of so much advertising. Thanks for your patience and thank you for riding the MTA.
