Hexagonal grids for town planning | Articles - Publishing Titles | GeoPlace

Thinking Outside the Blocks: Hexagonal Planning Ready for a Comeback | Articles - Publishing Titles | GeoPlace:
"When tiled into a honeycomb shape, the natural properties of hexagons provide the greatest area with the smallest perimeter compared to any other pattern. This can be translated into the language of a planner or developer to indicate that the length of road for a given area will be less in a hexagonal network than with any other shape, including the square. And water, sewer and other utility installations closely follow street layout. Roadways provide the most convenient and economical location to place gas mains, water and sewer pipes; so as road length changes, so does the need and costs for corresponding infrastructure."

fishbone patterns Preserve the Amazon with road construction | Discovery News

Road Trip Through the Amazon Forest : Discovery News:
Amazon_deforest1_h grid

"One of the most concrete examples of how government planning can preserve the Amazon is in organization of road construction. A well-planned grid of roads can preserve the forest much more than haphazard, meandering roads, concluded Walker."

A grid of roads forms a “fishbone” pattern on maps that allow wildlife corridors and reduce forest fragmentation. The meandering or “dendritic” roads can cut the forest into disconnected chunks and isolate wildlife in pockets.

Lunchtime: Cool Animation w/ Moire pattern Videos+grids: (via Queenie's)

Moire pattern | Queenie's: << visit Queenie's for video [excerpt below]

In physics, a moiré pattern (play /mwɑːˈr/; French: [mwaʁe]) is an interferencepattern created, for example, when two grids are overlaid at an angle, or when they have slightly different mesh sizes.
"This is a new way of creating animation to me, similiar story behind it to what I saw in the toy mesum. Also I think it is related to my idea of secret letter becuase people cannot realize how amazing it is with out looking through the ‘lines’, I definately want to do it myself."

Physics: atomic-scale surface imaging ushered nanotechnology: physics.aps.org

Physics - Proper carbon ID required:
"The ability to image surfaces with atomic-scale resolution in the 1980s ushered in the nanotechnology era. From the beginning, it was understood that although scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) could resolve distances between individual atoms on surfaces, what the images really showed were spatial variations in the electronic density of states of the surface near the Fermi level"

World’s Great islamic Calligraphers convention + #Calligraphy | timesunion.com - Albany NY

World’s Great Calligraphers on one Spot, Wow (1) - Muslim Women - Religion, culture and Islam - timesunion.com - Albany NY:

"Calligraphy is one of the fascinating branches of Islamic art, the power of the word is eye catching and spiritually enriching. I am attending a unique event this week, The Convention of the World’s Renowned Calligraphers of the Holy Quran here at Al Medinah Al Munawarah."

Well known calligraphers are invited by King Fahd’s Center for the Printing of the Holy Quran [...]
The exhibit is beyond description, it exemplified the wealth and depth of the calligraphy in Islamic culture. It also shows the capacity of calligraphy in Islam to include and absorb different cultures.
I took my young girl to the exhibit, I did not know how much she will get out of it, she liked it, and she was especially amazed with the workshops and the gift she got from one of the widely known calligraphers Mr. Saud Khan an inscription of her name. I will go again today and probably come back with more stories. For now here is the website: http://multaqa.qurancomplex.gov.sa/?page_id=563

Valleytronics one step closer to reality | e! Science News

NRL researchers take a step toward valleytronics | e! Science News:

This image shows an extended line defect in graphene. The band structure of graphene with its two valleys is shown in blue and red.

The valley degree of freedom in graphene gained attention in 2007 when it was proposed that electrons and holes could be filtered according to which valley they occupy. Unfortunately, the structures required for this and subsequent valley filters are difficult to fabricate, and as a result a valley filter has yet to be demonstrated experimentally

"Valley refers to energy depressions in the band structure, which describes the energies of electron waves allowed by the symmetry of the crystal."
