This was the crafty book that I had as a kid: How to Make Flibbers. Etc. by Robert Lopshire.
I gave my copy of the book to my friend's 8 year old boy and 10 year old girl and they both really enjoy making all the projects inside. Learn how to make a flibber online. Guaranteed great fun for kids.
The directions are incomplete though. Once the newspaper is in a roll (see the picture at their website), carefully use scissors to cut halfway down the tube, creating four "fingers" that are still attached at the bottom. Then, grab all 4 fingers of the innermost layer and gently pull this layer out while holding the very bottom of the roll with your other hand. As the center layer slides out, it will pull all the other layers out at the same time to eventually form this triumphant baton (maybe not as tall as the book jacket). The fingers will naturally splay-out from the center. Give it a try!

type specimens represent a whole category of book collecting. i have a few in my design library but i do not collect them per se. accidentally accumulate is more like it. surely designers roger black, jonathan hoefler and matthew carter have many, many fine examples. this particular type specimen comes from a special place and a unique person. i have had it for more than a dozen years. as a student at the yale school of art i became friends with one of my professors, paul rand.

"He could plainly see that the document described a technique called the one-time pad fully 35 years before its supposed invention during World War I by Gilbert Vernam, an AT&T engineer, and Joseph Mauborgne, later chief of the Army Signal Corps.
Although not widely used today because it is relatively difficult to work with, the one-time pad is still viewed as one of strongest ways to encrypt a communication. The technique is distinguished by the use of a random key, shared by both parties, to encode the message and decode it; the key must be used only once and then securely disposed of."

The exhibit is beyond description, it exemplified the wealth and depth of the calligraphy in Islamic culture. It also shows the capacity of calligraphy in Islam to include and absorb different cultures.
I took my young girl to the exhibit, I did not know how much she will get out of it, she liked it, and she was especially amazed with the workshops and the gift she got from one of the widely known calligraphers Mr. Saud Khan an inscription of her name. Interesting pattern from Jinny Yu that reminds me of the endpapers for a book I reviewed recently - Pictorial Webster's: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities. Jinny's work is being shown this month at The Convent of St. Cecilia in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
The pattern on the endpapers and the edge of the pages makes use of all the type that was stamped with a linotype machine for the captions of the book. All the type was cast together and printed with different colors.
