"The 53-year-old El Centro native and San Diego State graduate has been in the garment game for more than two decades. The local branding, design and public relations firm he founded with his girlfriend, Robbi Ely, helped create looks for Tommy Hilfiger, Hang Ten, Cole Haan and Robert Talbott, among others.

One thing he’s learned about fashion is that everything old becomes new again. And that it sometimes pays to zig when everybody else is zagging.

Right now, menswear is mostly a sleek and sometimes severe world of close-fitting, pleatless pants and slim-cut shirts and jackets. It’s been that way for several years now, and Stinson thinks people are getting bored with it. He is.

“The next trend is usually the reverse of what’s voguish now,” he said. “It’s like Einstein said: For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction.”

That was Newton, but no matter. Stinson’s “equal and opposite reaction” is to go back some 60 years to the Golden Age of Hollywood, to Fred Astaire in high-waisted, deeply pleated, elegantly draped pants. He’s taken that classic look and walloped it with hues (butterscotch, eggplant, raspberry) and patterns (argyle, houndstooth, polka dot) that make the eyes pop. He calls it “tasteful flamboyance.”"

"Eight years after troops in Afghanistan were outfitted with new uniforms, the Army is shopping for a different camouflage for its fatigues and equipment.

The move to a different uniform comes after soldiers, many of them redeploying to Afghanistan, began voicing their criticism in the summer of 2009 of the 'universal' camouflage pattern, introduced in 2004 and meant to be used in all types of battle environments.

'They were saying that they didn't think the color selection was very effective for the terrain in Afghanistan,' says Col. Bill Cole, the project manager for Soldier Protection and Individual Equipment. 'Afghanistan's a really diverse country in geographical terms. There are lots of sandy desert areas, but it also has mountainous areas that you would see up in the Alps. It has green irrigated fields that look like Iowa in the summer. It's a very diverse environment and soldiers would often traverse these different areas in one patrol.'"

It seems like two branches of the military were in competition for using MarPat, the marines laid claim to the pattern for "brand" recognition, and the Army backed down and looked for a different pattern. That's one of the contradictions of camouflage - the uniforms must be recognizable, while at the same time blending into the background. Multicam has been selected by the Australian Army, but other military services have rejected the pattern because, rather than hiding the grunt, it actually "paints a target" on the soldier revealing to the enemy exactly where to take a shot.

The effectiveness of Dazzle camouflage is being questioned as well. New studies reveal that dazzle patterns are only effective when a vehicle is moving at high speeds.

"Army aircrews headed to Afghanistan will look like their ground-pounding brethren, as all Air Warrior equipment will now be fielded in the Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern, or OCP (aka Multicam pattern).



The 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, out of Fort Campbell, Ky., was the first to be outfitted with OCP gear earlier this year. The Army has given the green light to ensure each of the 3,000 aircrew members who deploy annually will have the same gear. The switch will come at no additional cost to the Army, officials said."

The OCP issue will include:

• A Primary Survival Gear Carrier with pockets for each aircrew member and one per CH-47 Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk for door gunners;

• A soft body armor cover to replace the current Universal Camouflage, or UC, cover for each aircrew member and one per CH-47 and UH-60 for door gunners;

• Aircrew survival egress knife sheath to replace the current UC sheath for each aircrew member and one per CH-47 and UH-60 for door gunners;

• Short tether for crew chief and medic to replace the UC tether;

• Two additional M4 ammunition pockets for OH-58 Kiowa and AH-64 Apache pilots;

• Portable helicopter oxygen delivery system pouches, as required;

• Encrypted aircraft wireless intercom system pouch, as required.
