#Concave or #convex 3D Bubble Text effect + #Zazzle product creation templates

Starting to put more of my own collections of memorabilia on the swag at Zazzle, and having a good time with the effects you can get with two layers of text.

The text below looks concave, like it was printed on the side of a very large bubble or sphere, bowed-out toward the viewer. This technique can be done with photoshop, but can also be accomplished with the zazzle online product building tools.

The trick is to make two identical text layers, and then change the font size and the color of only one layer. Make sure that both layers are centered vertically and horizontally.

The usual arrangement is to make the smaller text a dark color so it looks like a drop-shadow, and to keep it on the bottom layer, "below" the larger text. You can get an interesting effect if you reverse this arrangement. If the smaller text is on the top layer, then it looks like the text is convex, bowed-out away from the viewer.

The inspiration for this idea originally came from an email newsletter by the good folks at ZazzleHow2 on Facebook. "Learn how to make personalized 3D text on Zazzle with our most recent Zazzle How2 video". You can view it on the Zazzle How2 Acceleration Resources web page, which also has videos about making zazzle templates.

Briefly: To get a drop shadow, create one text layer with the correct font, size and position on the product. Click the box to make it a template object. Then, use the Zazzle pull-down menu to "copy" and "paste" to make an identical copy of the text (control-c does not work).

Then, carefully drag the text on the screen one little pixel to the right, and one pixel down. Change the color of this text, and rearrange the layers in the list so the drop-shadow is below the other text layer.

We used this to get a white drop-shadow outline the text on a dark background for the image of a swan at the KidsLife store on Zazzle.

To make a customizable drop shadow for zazzle template, verify that both text layers have the exact same Product page label: and URL parameter name: , and ✔ Allow editing on product page. Your customer will only need to fill-in the text once, and both text layers will update at the same time.

Beatrix Potter + Benjamin Rabier in the #publicdomain #storybook

Dozens of new artists entered into the public domain this year. Check the list of 2014 public domain artists at wikipedia, and the Public Domain Day website to see more.

The work of Beatrix Potter (1866 – 1943) is not under copyright this year (in most cases). You can see my (brief) reviews of the best Beatrix Potter titles available on archive.org, all with high-quality graphics. eBooks can be downloaded to your tablet computer to read with the kids at night.
• The tale of Tom Kitten is a pop-up book, but the graphics are excellent
• Tom Kitten (Short version) "Beatrix Potter Board Book series (1996)"
• The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse - Insects
• The tale of Benjamin Bunny
• The Tale of the Pie and the Patty Pan (HTML only)
• Cecily Parsley's nursery rhymes [Personal Favorite]

The next generation: Flopsy Bunnies. Charming, and brutal. Mr. McGregor want to chop off their heads!

The tale of Benjamin Bunny
It only took me a while to figure out that "Histoire de Pierre Lapin" was not a book about a historical figure by the author, but Lapin is the French word for Rabbit (doh).

These drawings by French artist Benjamin Rabier are also in the public domain.  I fell in love with the images and added alphabet letters to make these items on Zazzle. Rabier released an alphabet book of animals, and several other publications over his lifetime.

Endpapers from ancient manuscripts #marbleing endpaper #Pattern

The Internet Archive (archive.org) continues to be a fantastic source for public domain works of ancient manuscripts, complete with images of the cover, binding and the endpapers.

Continuing my research on the symbolism and graphic arts of alchemy recently turned up a score of books that have not been available before. Especially important is the personal papers of Manly Palmer Hall (March 18, 1901 -August 29, 1990) who founded the Philosophical Research Society in California.

The Manly Palmer Hall collection of alchemical manuscripts, 1500-1825 was transferred to The Getty Research Institute, containing 243 manuscripts on the subjects of alchemy, hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, and related arts bound together in 68 volumes. The first two endpaper samples on this page are from this collection. The second example is my favorite - with two marbling techniques on the same page.

French Curl style marbling

Spanish Wave
Spanish Wave:  A beautiful 3-D effect that gives the effect of gathered fabric, though the paper is actually flat.  The pattern was supposedly accidentally invented by a drunk Spanish marbler in the 1800's; it is produced by rocking the paper back and forth while printing it. See many more examples of Marbling techniques from Marbleart.
